The authors of the Declaration explain why these particular values need defending in Australia and outline the implications of their pledge.

Religious freedom, marriage and family, and the sacredness of human life have provided the foundations enabling Western democratic societies to flourish. We erode these foundations at our peril.
The faith which is at the heart of many of the values and strengths underpinning the Australian nation now compels us to speak up in their defence.
For the future of this nation, and for our children’s future, we call upon all like-minded citizens to support and sign this declaration.

Religious Freedom

We affirm the fundamental right of Australians to religious freedom and freedom of speech, and we oppose legislation which denies such freedoms. We likewise oppose laws subjugating our nation to foreign powers and instrumentalities which restrict these freedoms.

Marriage and family
We affirm the importance and social utility of marriage between a man and a woman and the families formed thereby.

Human Life
We insist on the right of all persons, including those who are vulnerable or dependent, to protection from conception to natural death. We will support, protect, and be advocates for such people, since to do anything less is to weaken our humanity and despise our personhood.
We will not comply with any directive that compels us to participate in or facilitate abortion, embryo-destructive research, assisted suicide, euthanasia, or any other act that involves the intentional taking of innocent human life.

The election of Julia Gillard as Prime Minister reveals the deep divisions within the Labor party, with factional leaders and Unions conspiring to change the leader of the party.

The failed policies and broken promises of the Rudd government led to the appointment of Julia Gillard as leader of the Party, and thus as Prime Minister.

“However, since she was Deputy Prime Minister throughout the term of Mr Rudd’s government, Julia Gillard must take some responsibility for those failed promises. In particular she is ultimately responsible for the rorts in the Building the Education Revolution’,” said Peter Stokes, Executive Director of Salt Shakers, a Christian Ethics Group.

Mr Stokes said “We are particularly concerned at the feminist and socialist agenda of Julia Gillard – including her membership of the Fabian Society – a socialist group – and her membership of Emily’s list, a very feminist, pro-abortion group in the Labor Party.”

We are also concerned that we now have an unmarried Prime Minister living in the Lodge with her de facto ‘partner. This is not a situation that puts the emphasis on marriage and family – rather, it undermines it.

The appointment of Julia Gillard as Prime Minister highlights the control that the various factions and the Union movement have in the Labor Party, since it appears that when the ‘Right’ faction of the ALP expressed concern about Kevin Rudd’s leadership the move was on to dump him as leader.

Mr Stokes concluded “With volatility in the leadership of both the major parties, it is vital that all Australians carefully analyse what all the Parties stand for and assess the values of the candidates in their own electorates, rather than just focusing on the ‘leader’ of a Party.”

So, how do Christians articulate the values and principles they want protected in nations where leaders are quick to talk about the National Interest but incompetent in defending the Christian heritage which has made these nations great?
One of the answers is found in Christian on-line declarations signed by many Christians around the world. A recent example is the UK Westminster 2010 Declaration. Its opening statement declares: “Protecting human life, protecting marriage, and protecting freedom of conscience are foundational for creating and maintaining strong families, caring communities and a just society. Our Christian faith compels us to speak and act in defence of all these.”
In Australia, the People Charter sought  A MILLION SIGNATURES TO SAY NO TO AN AUSTRALIAN BILL OF RIGHTS BECAUSE IN FACT IT WILL RESTRICT OUR FREEDOM TO SAY AND LIVE BY WHAT WE BELIEVE.

Do we have real reasons to fear further erosion of Christian values in the public domain? YES, WE CERTAINLY DO. The composition of a parliament has a great influence on the decisions made in the “National Interest”. When those who lead us are unable to discern the importance of Christian values for the well-being of a nation, we have good reason to be concerned.
