Victorians must hold the Government responsible for continuing mayhem on our roads.

According to Dallas Clarnette, chairman of the Christian Democratic Party, “this government’s policies are dishonest. They are directed, not at effective road safety but what everybody suspects is the case – raising revenue. Dr Clarnette said, “Current policies and strategies advertised as the government’s tough policy are not working. It is this government took traffic management seriously and were informed by the road safety evidence from around the world.”

Speed cameras do not reduce accidents but actually increase them. Some US states such as Arizona has banned all cameras. In Canada, Winnipeg found accidents increased by 58% after cameras were installed. Yet the Victorian Government stubbornly relies on cameras, which are both unreliable and prone to abuse. In 2009 21% more tickets were issued than before, but accidents only decreased by 5%.

The argument that ’speed kills’ and cameras are necessary is also hollow. If this were true, why would most European states permit drivers to travel at 130 kms per hour? Only Cyprus and Norway limit speed to 100 kms, while the UK and Sweden make it 110.

Clearly the government is drug addicted, the drug being a daily injection of revenue from cameras. Knowing that Australia’s road trauma costs the nation $17Bn each year with 5 people being killed each day, the government has blood on its hands by not getting serious about the real issue: dangerous drivers and bad policies.

Victoria needs visible police patrols targeting actually dangerous drivers, not those who exceed the limit by a margin. As Victoria has the lowest number of police of all states, the force must be increased urgently. A visible police presence is the strongest deterrent to dangerous drivers and thugs on our streets. Victorians should replace this failed government with an honest traffic management system. Till then, Victoria will continue to suffer from bad government.

Dallas Clarnette
Chairman
Christian Democratic Party, Victoria

Pell worried about Greens holding balance of power

Published: June 22, 2010

George Pell last night told a virtual audience of churchgoers with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott that the Greens have an “explicitly anti-Christian” agenda.

He told the audience that he is concerned about the likelihood that the Greens will gaining the balance of power in the next Senate.

“Their program is explicitly anti-Christian,” he said.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Opposition Leader Tony Abbott spoke with Christian leaders and churchgoers in a virtual gathering of 500 parishes of all denominations from across the country.

Mr Rudd was forced to defend the progress of the Northern Territory intervention and income quarantining, reports ABC News. Meanwhile Mr Abbott was asked to explain his stance on asylum seekers.

“We can see measurable change,” Mr Rudd said, about his policy. “Basic things like retaining, for example, half a person’s welfare payments in order to make sure that proper things like food and proper provisions for the family are purchased and not spent on alcohol and not spent on other forms of substance abuse.

He said he remains committed to fighting climate change, but will need a new Senate to get the emissions trading scheme passed into law.

On asylum seekers, Mr Abbott said: “If someone is a refugee, that person has to be given appropriate sanctuary in our country – that’s not the same though as giving that person permanent residency.”

CDP Welcomes Cannabis Law Reform

Cannabis Law Reform Bill 2009

This Bill has been read twice in the Legislative Assembly in October last year.

It is expected to be debated in the very near future.

The Bill proposes to repeal the Cannabis Control Act 2003 which tolerates the cultivation of a maximum 2 plants. Cultivated cannabis plants, cannabis resin or any other cannabis derivative will now be prohibited in any quantity as per the Misuse of Drugs Act 1981.

Possession of any quantity of cannabis will be prohibited, however possession of a smoking implement containing trace of cannabis and possession of no more than 10 grams of cannabis (instead of 30 grams currently) will be treated as a minoroffence.

A person caught with a minor offense will either elect to have the matter dealt with in court or attend a “cannabis intervention session” within 28 days. The purpose of an intervention session would be to inform the offender about the adverse health and social consequences of cannabis use, the laws relating to the use, possession and cultivation of cannabis and effective strategies.

It will also now be of an offence to sell or display for sale “cannabis smoking paraphernalia”. Penalty for sale to a minor will be set at $10,000, $5000 in any other case.

Comment: This is a significant improvement on the current situation and Minister Graham Jacobs should be congratulated for this. Pray that the legislation may go through and that the government will invest significant funds for a high profile public education campaign

Greens will introduce Euthanasia Bill in 2010

Voluntary Euthanasia Bill 2009

Greens MLC Greg Chapple gave motion to introduce his “Voluntary Euthanasia” Private Member Bill before Parliament went into recess last year.

The Bill will now be debated some time after Parliament resumes in March.

A final copy of the Bill has not been sighted, however a draft. circulated defines euthanasia as “the deliberate administration of a drug or combination of drugs …by any means in concentrations that will and is intended to cause death … or the withholding or withdrawing of medical treatment … knowing that death will either result or occur more quickly”.

The intent therefore is to legislate suicide. This is not a Bill that deals with refusing futile or burdensome medical treatment when death is inevitable. It is a true euthanasia bill with the intention to cause death.

Action: Write to your Legislative Council members to express your opposition to this Bill and state that rather than legislating for euthanasia, Parliament should consider providingmore government support for palliative care

A poll conducted for Fairfax Newspapers (The Age, SMH…) by Nielsen has found that the majority of Australians believe in God.

The survey of 1000 Australians found that 68% of people believe in God.

That is very close to the figure from the Australian census – in 2001 the figure was 68%, with 64% in 2006.

Some people are happy to declare they are atheists – the recent Nielsen poll found that 24% said they didn’t believe in ‘God or a universal spirit’ and 7% were unsure. . .
